The story behind the studio
Founded in 2017 on Portage Ave with five chairs and a clear point of view.
Riverdspark opened in 2017 with a deliberate premise: that a beauty salon works best when it functions more like a personal stylist relationship than a service transaction. The founders — two licensed stylists who had both spent years in high-volume salons — had watched the same pattern repeat itself: clients came in with nuanced requests, got handed to whoever was available that day, and left with results that were technically fine but personally off. Riverdspark was built as the correction to that pattern. From the first week, every client was assigned a primary stylist. Every appointment was booked with enough time to include a real consultation. And every service — from a simple trim to a multi-process colour — was treated as one chapter in an ongoing conversation about how someone wants to present themselves in the world. The studio on Portage Ave was designed to match that philosophy: soft indigo accents against white walls, north-facing windows that flood the space with clean Manitoba light, five stations arranged so each client has visual privacy without feeling isolated. In Winnipeg's beauty market, Riverdspark occupies a specific middle ground — premium in quality and attention, but not exclusionary in price or attitude.
How we work — and what we won't promise
Transparency is part of the service.
Every new client at Riverdspark begins with a digital intake form that covers hair history, skin concerns, lifestyle pace, and aesthetic references. That information goes directly to your matched stylist before your first visit, so the consultation on the day isn't starting cold. We serve clients across Winnipeg's central and west-end neighbourhoods, and our waitlist typically runs two to four weeks for new bookings — a function of the time we spend per appointment, not indifference. We are honest about service limits: not every colour goal can be achieved in a single session, not every skin concern responds to cosmetic treatment alone, and we will always say so. If what you need falls outside our scope — waxing, lash work, spray tanning — we'll refer you to specialists we trust rather than stretch into areas where we're not the right fit. We believe a good stylist is, in part, someone who knows the edges of their expertise and stays inside them. That's the standard we hold ourselves to across all five members of our current team, and it's the standard we'll maintain as Riverdspark grows.
